Providing Building & Construction Services in Hastings East Sussex since 1933

George Stone (Folkestone) Limited started life under the guidance of brothers George & Charles Stone in 1933. In 1942 Charles Stone brought the company to the Hastings area, acquiring Adams & Jarrett Limited two years later. In 1956 George Stone (Hastings) Limited was officially formed, although the company was not incorporated until 1958.

In 1980 the Company continued under John Christie Limited, a holding company, owned by the Christie family of Glyndebourne and have enjoyed a stable trading history in Hastings and St. Leonards on Sea ever since.

The early George Stone was a major player in construction having a hand in much of the development of the area. Many roads today show the scope of our work and can be identified by having “stone” in their name.

In 2003 the Company underwent a change of branding. With this re-brand came a focus on new initiatives i.e. Investors in People, which continue to strengthen the company today.

In recent years the company has concentrated on its strengths, being anything from small works and maintenance to contracts for private clients worth £500,000. We currently undertake all maintenance for East Sussex County Council within a 15 mile radius, work closely with several Architects, and are the preferred contractor for many local schools and National Trust.

One of the key objectives of George Stone is to promote the construction industry as a whole. It is a well known fact, within the business, that in 10/15 years time there will be a severe shortage of skilled tradesmen unless something is done about it now.

The company has a comprehensive and thorough training programme which is open to all members of staff and there is currently an apprentice undertaking NVQ Level 2 in Decorative Finishes. We also work closely with the local secondary schools taking part in careers fairs and offering work experience to those interested in a career within our industry.

Our commitment to training has helped us to gain the Investors in People standard and also brought recognition to the company when we won the Sussex Business Awards – Learning Pays Category, sponsored by the Sussex Learning & Skills Council.

Our quality of work and a highly qualified workforce has gained us an excellent reputation locally over the last 50 years and has brought us many awards. These include The Federation of Master Builders South East Region 2007, an English Heritage Award for Battle Museum and three further Heritage Awards for private properties including the most recent for Penhurst Retreat Centre.

Our work with local schools and the community also gained us a 1066 Business Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community.

We are proud to hold accreditation to The Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme which is a Government national register. Furthermore we employ all our tradesmen on a direct basis and have recently undertaken to have all staff fully CRB checked.
